Knee Pain Treatment
Runner’s knee, meniscus irritation, arthritis, IT band friction — knee pain has many faces. I figure out which one is yours and treat the chain, not just the joint.
Why Your Knee Hurts
The knee is caught between the hip and the ankle — and it pays for their dysfunction. Weak glutes let the knee cave inward. Stiff ankles force the knee to compensate. Tight quads pull the kneecap off track. Most knee pain is a movement problem, not a knee problem.
That said, structural issues are real: meniscus tears, ligament sprains, osteoarthritis, and patellar tendinopathy all need proper assessment to rule in or out.
How I Treat Knee Pain
I watch how you move — squat, lunge, walk — to see where the chain breaks down. Then I test the knee itself: ligaments, meniscus, patellar tracking. Treatment addresses both the local irritation and the upstream drivers (usually hips and ankles).
Acupuncture for Knee Pain
Acupuncture around the knee reduces local inflammation and pain fast. But the real magic is upstream: needling the glute medius to re-fire hip stability, releasing tight IT bands and quads, and addressing calf/ankle restrictions. Fix the chain and the knee stops taking the beating.
Functional Medicine for Knee Pain
For arthritic knees, systemic inflammation is the enemy. I work on gut health, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and key joint-supporting nutrients (collagen, omega-3s, curcumin). Less systemic inflammation means less joint pain and slower degeneration.
Supplements I often suggest
For knee pain, these are the supplements I suggest most often in my practice:
- Inflammatone (Designs for Health) — Herbs, nutrients, and enzymes that help modulate the inflammatory response.
- Turmero Active (Apex Energetics) — High-absorption liquid curcumin for joint comfort.
- OmegAvail Hi-Po Fish Oil (Designs for Health) — 1,600 mg EPA/DHA per serving with lipase for absorption — no fishy aftertaste.
