Acupuncture for Surfing
I work with surfers, so I know what surfing does to your body — the paddling that wrecks your shoulders, the pop-up that torques your lower back, the wipeouts that leave everything sore. My job is to keep you in the water, not on the beach.
Common Surfing Injuries I Treat
- Shoulder impingement — hours of paddling overload the rotator cuff and pinch the subacromial space, leaving you sore every time you stroke.
- Lower back pain — paddling prone with an arched spine for hours compresses the lumbar facet joints and tightens the low back.
- Neck strain — keeping your head up while paddling cranks the neck into extension, and wipeouts can whip it even further.
- Ankle sprain — landing aerials wrong or getting folded in shallow water leaves ankles swollen, unstable, and slow to heal.
How I Work With Surfing Athletes
I work with surfers using orthopedic acupuncture and dry needling to calm impinged shoulders, loosen a compressed low back, and restore range where it’s gone missing. My assessment is sport-specific: I look at your paddle mechanics, your pop-up, your stance, and your session load — not just where it hurts. I also put athletes through EXSTORE testing (Examine, Restore) to determine which muscles aren’t firing properly, so treatment targets the real problem. And everything I do is aimed at return to play, with a clear plan to get you back out past the break, catching waves, and surfing the way you want to.
Supplements I often suggest
For surfing, these are the supplements I suggest most often in my practice:
- PerfectAmino Powder, Mixed Berry (BodyHealth) — Essential amino acids fr muscle protein synthesis — no calories, won’t break a fast.
- Creatine Monohydrate Powder, Unflavored (Designs for Health) — Supports muscle growth and performance when paired with resistance training.
- OmegAvail Hi-Po Fish Oil (Designs for Health) — 1,600 mg EPA/DHA per serving with lipase for absorption — no fishy aftertaste.
